Aside From a Medical Emergency...
...our trip here was about as bad as it gets (at least as bad as anything we have ever experienced). Warning: not a post for weak stomached individuals. All I can say is we learned our lesson: sick kid = don't travel. We really thought D was doing ok, not great, but ok enough for the trip to Tampa. The main thing we were worried about was having enough diapers, wipes and changes of clothes for the plane rides since nothing was containing his diapers. He had kept down an entire bottle of milk (we resorted to bottles to ensure he was getting enough fluid) and had eaten some oatmeal and bananas throughout the day. We figured he was on the up and up. We were SO.WRONG. About 10 minutes after we boarded the (small) plane in ABQ, he emptied the entire contents of his stomach all over me, the seat, the floor and some on G too. And let us just say that it was NASTY, both in appearance and smell. Did I mention we were already seated on a small plane...a small metal tube with a bunch of people who were hot and ready to depart. The smell alone was enough that they almost asked us to deplane and try again the next day; if G hadn't needed to be in Tampa for work purposes, we would have done so pronto. Thankfully, a very kind flight attendent helped me dump two cans of club soda and a huge bottle of water on my shorts and shoes, and sprayed her own lysol and body freshener all over me...it was enough to get us through the hour-long first leg of our journey. She also gave me (yes gave me) a pair of her own shorts to change into once we hit DIA. We are forever grateful for her kindness. D was pretty upset the whole hour, whining and crying. Then, as if the first bodily fluids assault wasn't enough, he had a massive diaper. We did our best to change him in our laps, but somehow it got everywhere: all over G's shirt, in D's hair and on his clothes. We did our best to get everyone cleaned up, ran through a ton of wipes (in addition to the ones used for the first episode), put on D's next to last back-up outfit and prayed. When we finally landed in Denver, D had four more horrid diapers (and by now his little booty was so sore...with actual bleeding sores on it...from all the wiping, he was wailing whenever we had to change his diapers). We were now worried about running out of clothes and diapers, and were almost out of wipes. G ran around and found some saint who gave us some extra wipes (since none of the stores in the airport actually sell something useful) and bought a few cartons of apple juice and water. Though I vowed no juice, we fed D juice as we were in a panic that he was getting dehydrated. And he drank it. And then slept most of the next 3-hour long flight to Tampa. He did have one diaper, but the difference between a milk one and an apple juice one is, well, huge. And we managed to get him changed without having a repeat of the first flight. Though we dealt with a few more diapers before we actually reached our hotel, we did finally make it. D seems to be doing better today, though we are still battling diaper issues and his extremely sore booty. He isn't dehydrated, has been drinking juice all day and has even eaten some pears. And as for G and me, we finally got showers and will be doing laundry tonight to completely rid ourselves of a rank smell we hope to never smell in that situation EVER.AGAIN. We are hoping and praying that this GI bug is almost through D's system so we can all resume normal operations and enjoy the beautiful pool and beach where we are staying; the UC doc told us to expect about three days and this is day three.

Yikes. Nothing like stomach stuff on a trip. Hopefully D starts feeling much better. Tip for containing diaper issues: Get some pull ups in a size bigger than he's wearing in diapers. Put him in the diaper and then put the pull up over the diaper. It's bulky, but sometimes can keep the ickies from escaping. Hang in there!!
Ugh! I am sorry you had to deal with that. I hope the other passengers were at least accommodating. You deserve a week at a spa after the past few weeks.
You poor things!!!! What a miseable trip! If you are anywhere near a pharmacy, I HIGHLY recommed getting some acidophilis tablets and crushing some up in D's bottles. It cute down on the duration & intensity of GI bugs - I SWEAR by it! You guys are awesome parents! Hang in there!
