Sick Again

My poor sick little baby :(. D got sick at the end of November and then again in early December, but thankfully was well in time to travel to Ohio for Christmas. It is so hard when these little guys are sick...I was talking with my Dad last night and we both had the same sentiment, you wish you could cough, sneeze, blow your nose, and breathe for them since they have an impossible time with those key functions while down with a cold/flu/etc. Unfortunately, all you can do is love them, give them medicine, wipe their nose, and use that evil blue suction bulb (which D hates...of course!) to try and give them some relief with breathing. So, where did this newest bout come from? Well, I finally took D to the gym daycare last Thursday as I felt comfortable with it since he can crawl. I had previously taken him twice when he was almost 3 months and was just not happy with the facilities for non-crawling kiddos. At any rate, someone must have dropped off their SICK kiddo and now, well, now I wish I could do all those things I just mentioned above for D. The past three nights (and days) have been mostly unpleasant for us both, and not filled with much sleep = cranky baby and cranky mom. Sunday and Monday night I opted to bring D in with me to sleep after listening to him whine and cry over the monitor. That of course resulted in less whining and crying, but no sleep for either of us; D because he could barely breathe (he doesn't understand that he needs to breathe through his mouth) and me because it killed me to hear him struggle all night. After stumbling through yesterday in a zombie-like state, I decided I was going to leave him in his crib all night no matter how hard that was for us both, and I was going to turn the monitor down as far as possible so I could try to get some sleep...mom without sleep = no good for sick baby. He also has decided that he needs to cough until he gags, so we have been through countless outfits and bed changings the past two days, not to mention lots of wasted food and medicine. Last night things went ok until 1 AM when he woke up wailing. I gave him some medicine and used the evil bulb and then rocked him back to sleep. He woke up every hour on the hour and then wailed again around 5:40 AM. I finally conceded and brought him in with me, and thank goodness, the little guy slept (soundly!) until 7:45 AM (he usually gets up at 6 AM). I am truly hoping that this might be a sign of getting better!! Oh, did I mention that all this time he has also been teething :)? Talk about a double whammy. Ok, off to go pull D out of the fireplace and grab the evil bulb.

Some unsolicited advice: :) Aidan almost always got something upper respiratory when he was teething. Our pediatrician said it had to do with irritation/swelling with the gums. Horrible Mom that I am I would let him sleep in his car seat while I slept nearby - it allowed the nose to drain enough that he could get some rest. We also dig the Sudacare plug-ins. I hear your pain! :)

Oh no! I know just how you feel. When Sam got sick for the first time, I was convinced she was the sickest baby that ever was. It is so hard to see them even remotely unhappy. And it seems to last and last. Just know that you are not alone and, of course, he WILL get better. Probably just in time to get sick again:( The winter sucks. But just think of all the immunity they are building!
