Dancing Baby?

From the time D was born until he was about 3 to 4 months old, he had very dainty hand poses, mostly when he was sleeping. It was just adorable, and we wondered if it meant we should be thinking about ballet/dance classes or even gymnastics rather than football :). Check out his left hand in the picture below:

Alas, the dainty posing went away once he started napping and sleeping in his crib 99% of the time, and out came the conventional sporty toys: football; basketball/baseball/football combo; and the golf set. However, just yesterday, I witnessed an event which makes me wonder if maybe first impressions are indeed the truest. As everything in our house is babyproofed, in order for D to reach anything, he has to stand up as tall as he possibly can, and even then, he mostly can't reach. Yesterday, he stood on his toes to try and touch part of a picture album. But, he didn't stand on his toes like most normal people do. Check out his left foot:

Ouch!!!...is the first word that comes to my mind. I, however, was not a toe-shoe ballerina! Perhaps he is channeling Kate Winslet in the Titanic? Maybe we do need to enroll this child in dance classes when he is old enough. I realize that it is not necessarily conventional in the US for male children, but I can't say I have ever lived my life conventionally. Evidence? I selected Chemical Engineering as a major in college and in so doing, became the only female in my diffi-q class. There is more, but this post is not about me. So, once again we are faced with the decision: to enroll or not to enroll. Personally, I think ballet/dance/gymnastics are phenomenal all-around body fitness activities, and would be pleased if D enjoyed one or all of those. For now though, I suppose the appropriate thing to do is keep our eye out and see how things develop. Then we can decide whether to pursue convention or not :).

go for it! Then our two boys can both be in ballet as I fully intend to enroll this guy when he is big enough.

M still does that!!! It makes my toes hurt just looking at his when he's walking around like that. I keep thinking that they're gonna break, but it doens't seem to bother him. Maybe they can all be in a dance troupe togther.

Whoa...hold on there! It is quite apparent that Drew is either doing the "moon walk" or more likely performing leg strengthening exercises to improve his "basketball" rebounding skills. He has demonstrated the two hand dunk to all of us, so he must be practicing for a new 360 spin dunk. Go for it Drew!

My two cents - expose him to everything that you can without pushing. He'll find his passion and thrive in it. As long as he is active, involved and happy he'll be fine.
