D at One and a Half Years!

Wow, even as I type those words, I can hardly believe D is really 18 months old today. He is certainly behaving like an 18 month old...I just can’t quite wrap my mind around the fact that we have an 18 month old boy. He is the busiest kid; we love watching him explore and learn about his world every day. There is no keeping him still, and even a quick trip to the grocery store can prove difficult since sitting in the cart is just not his favorite thing. Luckily, he is not resisting the jogger, so I am still able to get in some jogs/walks while he contently rides along. His vocabulary continues to explode even though many words sound the same. We have found that if we really listen and pay close attention, we can mostly decipher what is coming out of his mouth. Unless of course he is busy stringing a bunch of nonsense together as he tests out sentences. It is so fun to listen to him ramble on to himself in D-language, which I am sure someday soon will start to translate into English :). He runs all over the place and loves to be outside picking up sticks, rocks, crab-apples, leaves, you name it! And of course, petting any dog that will let him…and getting slurpy, slobbery kisses. The kid has absolutely zero fear of animals, which is both a blessing and a curse (I think) as we certainly have our work cut out for us trying to get him to understand that not all animals are friendly. And, if you haven’t already figured it out, I am probably one of the most lenient mom’s when it comes to germs. D licks EVERYTHING! Twice! I have pretty much given up worrying about it for now as long as he isn’t licking dog poop (since the oh-so-responsible dog owners of ABQ apparently can’t read the signs posted everywhere telling them they must scoop poop BY LAW). I will be happy when we are through this licking phase…although we will continue to be susceptible as he sucks his thumb a lot too :). Which, by the way, I think is too cute! The one thing we continue to have trouble with is his eating. He is the PICKIEST eater ever! We have discovered that a heavy dose of cheese and ranch seems to go a long way, but I swear if we didn’t still somewhat feed him, he would waste away to nothing with his eating habits. On the positive side, he does seem to like his veggies, so at least we make progress with that food group. His actual 18 month appointment is on Thursday, and we are really looking forward to seeing how much he weighs and how tall he is these days! Plus, for the first time since he was born, we have tons of questions for the doc :). And, we are beginning to keep the big P-word in the backs of our minds...yes, potty training. Right now he is showing absolutely zero signs of being ready, but we are oh so hopeful that in a few more months, he might show an interest. Pretty please with sugar on top? It would be awesome to have two kids in diapers for just a short period of time :)!!!
