Writing Wednesday

I find it infinitely interesting where one's mind can lead when given creative freedom. The final result here is faaaaar from where I started, and nowhere close to where I thought this prompt would take me. Hope you enjoy it anyway!

Also, just FYI for anyone reading these, the past few prompts I have attempted to keep at 100 (or multiple of) words. This one came in, by MS Word standards, at 200, whereas the others were 100.

Research Project

The white tendril of smoke floats slowly up into the clear sky.

It’s a dog. A bunny. It’s…

*WHAP*

…assault by a large feather pillow.

“Daydreaming again?”

Smoke rises from the mouth of my attacker, now sprawled on his back, cigarette dangling precariously from his slender fingers.

Circle after circle swirling higher with every puff, the stale blue walls of his bedroom stand in stark contrast to the toxins coming from him.

“Dude, what the hell?” I utter in my best you-know-you’re-scared-of-me voice.

His face turns slowly towards me, mischief mapping the corners of his mouth, a twinkle in his eyes.

“What?” His lips form a smirk as the word mockingly passes through them. “Our report on volcano activity is due tomorrow. You should be thanking me for getting your head out of the clouds and for my in-depth research…,” he says bringing his cancer-stick front and center and waving it around, “…on gas emission patterns.”

“Yea, well, you’ll be thanking me for saving your life with my in-depth research on kicking your best friend’s bad habit," I tease in return, grabbing the cigarette from his hands and flicking it into his left-over lemonade with a faint but final sizzle.
